Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) is to spend about $200 million to develop computer software that will help cars get around on roads that have been badly damaged by the winter storm.
The car maker has already launched its own computer-based driving software for the Audi A3 sport utility vehicle and the Golf GTI sedan.
Volkswagen will also develop its own self-driving technology, the company said.
Volkswagen said the technology would help it develop autonomous driving systems that will be used to improve safety in certain parts of the world.
It is the latest technology from Volkswagen that has helped it avoid lawsuits over diesel emissions that have killed hundreds of thousands of people around the world since 2010.
The company said the software will be ready for the market in 2019.
